We deserve better sports journalists. To compete with the web-crowd they now feel that they have to pepper their columns with insinuations and idiocy that wouldn’t even be allowed in many fanzines.
In the Sunday Mail today Gordon Waddell says:
“Again no-one deserves to feel their family is under threat. As I said in May the song the Celtic fans sing about him dying via a bullet from the IRA should be highlighted far more for the disgrace it is.
But why was he wrestling security to throw his shirt into the crowd after a game where he’d played for 12 minutes and contributed zero? And that’s without even touching the stories of him spitting towards fans as he got off the team bus.”

Stories? Can you believe a supposedly reputable journalist gives credence to “stories”? Do you see what he did there? He is not saying these stories are factual because then he would have to show facts. He is using this method as a shield because it means he can always say the “stories” are not his. The unenlightened reader will not see this nuance and take these “stories” as factual. It is the worst of the worst form of gutter journalism.
As for his accusation that Novo was “wrestling security”, I will not say much. The video of Novo “wrestling security” is here for you to see and it speaks for itself.

Great article, shows waddell for the twat that he is. He should be made to come out and explain his comments as your video clearly shows his article to be nothing but lies – and he still manages to give the IRA a mention in something that has nowt to do with football.

if i wasnt paranoid, 90 percent of the sports hacks were anti rangers or is it just me stop reading the daily record, evening times and any other anti rangers paper and they will stop this . or is it just me …
No wonder Strachan described Waddell and his hapless colleague Guidi as “two of the most revered and well respected journalists in Scotland” and claimed their “integrity is never in doubt”.
Nice to see youtube proving the guy’s a liar though. Let’s hope for his sake Waddell can provide some proof of the spitting “stories” because I hear that Nacho will be contacting a solicitor on Monday morning to discuss a defamation action. Repeating someone else’s lies is still libellous, Gordon, maybe if you paid more attention at college you’d know that…
This is just a further example of how the media in this country claim to give “even handed” reports of “The Old Firm”. What that means, in reality, is feel free to criticise Rangers, whether there are any facts or not. Criticise Celtic and you must have ALL your facts straight. Usually what happens is that when Celtic are in the wrong, they (the media) blame “The Old Firm” so as to dilute the response.
This, my friends, is because Celtic, like Liverpool fans, are sympathy junkies who are altogether unable to accept responsibilty for anything they do and the lack of baws in the Scottish media to blame them, on their own, and not as part of “The Old Firm” because of fear of reprisals.
I have had enough.
I call for the term “Old Firm” to be seen as unacceptable usage, like N…er or P..i because it perpetrates a myth about racial stereotypes. We are VERY different to them. Where we, in the face of adversity, see that the thing to do is to play things down and move on with dignity, THEY see a chance to scream in outrage (usually clambering for the moral high ground with remarks about, fuck, ANYTHING negative about Rangers they can dig or make up) and call for DJs’ children to be plagued or publish players’ addresses on the web or WHATEVER IT TAKES.
A friend of mine is one of the most prominent journalists/broadcasters in Scottish football. Even he, ever conscious of the effects of upsetting people, admitted, albeit privately (and he will remain anonymous) that it is much harder to criticise Celtic than Rangers. Because of the fans.
There needs to be a constant debate in Scottish football for many reasons – lack of international success, poor top flight league etc etc. The trouble we have is that the limelight is constantly usurped by the “Old Firm” debate. Because of the unwillingness of the media to naysay Celtic and their supporters and the Celtic supporters themselves constant carping about everything we, as a nation, are frozen in inaction. The wheels of progress have seized up. We have Scotland’s most talented player saying he doesn’t want to sign for either Ranger or Celtic because of all this pish. The real debate about Scottish football doesn’t exist. It’s fucking pathetic.
If journalists, Rangers fans and all fans of Scottish football could ever let slip the scales from their eyes and see the real debate we might get somewhere.
Waddell (what a waste of a great name) and his ilk will, in the meantime have their way. We will remain the whipping boys. Les garcons pis of Scotland. Why? A club that is, by most measures, the most successful club in the world? (don’t let the EC throw you – until a couple of months ago, Greece were the best team in Europe!). How does that work?
Cos it’s easier than arguing with people who have no sense of rational thought or perspective. It’s easier, as King Canute would doubtlessly have admitted, had he been telling the truth, than holding back the tide.
Until those scales slip though. we must resign ourselves to expect, and tolerate, more of the same.
